Severe winter weather is tightening its grip on parts of Japan, prompting authorities to issue high-level snow warnings in several regions bordering the Sea of Japan. Meteorologists cautioned that snowfall is intensifying rapidly in certain areas, raising the risk of transportation disruptions and other weather-related incidents.
As of Thursday, Ishikawa and Shiga prefectures were placed under a special alert by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), which announced a “significant heavy snow” notification for the two regions. This type of warning is reserved for situations where snowfall accelerates sharply over a short time, creating conditions that can quickly become hazardous.
Unlike standard snow advisories, this notification reflects an elevated level of concern. It is issued only when forecasters believe the pace and volume of snow accumulation could trigger serious problems, including road accidents, stranded vehicles or infrastructure damage.
