South Korea has taken a major step forward in rail innovation with the completion of a next-generation high-speed train designed to dramatically cut travel times across the country. Government officials announced that the core technologies behind the new model have now been finalized, positioning Korea among the global leaders in advanced rail systems.
The train, known as the EMU-370, is engineered to operate at speeds of up to 370 kilometers per hour in commercial service. With a top technical capability exceeding 400 kilometers per hour, it is expected to become the second-fastest high-speed train in the world once it enters regular operation. Only China’s upcoming CR450, which is still undergoing testing, is projected to surpass it in commercial speed.
Development of the EMU-370 was carried out as part of a national research and development initiative led by the Korea Railroad Research Institute. The multi-year effort brought together seven public and private organizations and ran for nearly four years, beginning in 2022 and concluding in late 2025. The project represented a significant investment in domestic engineering expertise, with more than 22 billion won committed, the majority of which was funded by the government alongside contributions from private-sector partners.
Beyond headline speed, the EMU-370 incorporates a range of technological improvements over Korea’s existing high-speed trains. Compared with the current EMU-320 model, the new train delivers substantially greater motor output while simultaneously reducing air resistance. Engineers have also focused on passenger comfort, lowering vibration levels and reducing interior noise to create a smoother, quieter ride even at extreme speeds.
The train has been designed to accommodate nearly 480 passengers and is powered by motors producing a combined output equivalent to dozens of mid-sized passenger vehicles. These specifications reflect a balance between raw performance and efficiency, ensuring that higher speeds do not come at the expense of stability or comfort.
Looking ahead, the government plans to begin building the first EMU-370 trainsets next year. Extensive testing is scheduled to follow, with trial operations targeted around 2030. If those tests proceed as planned, the train could enter commercial service shortly after 2031.
Officials believe the new rail technology will have far-reaching impacts beyond transportation. By making it possible to reach any major region of the country within roughly two hours, the EMU-370 is expected to support more balanced regional development and strengthen economic ties between cities. At the same time, the project is seen as a strategic move to bolster Korea’s competitiveness in the global high-speed rail market, where demand is increasingly shifting toward trains capable of exceeding 350 kilometers per hour.
The announcement also signals that Korea’s ambitions extend even further. Government representatives have indicated that work on a third-generation high-speed train capable of reaching 400 kilometers per hour will begin as early as next year, underscoring the country’s long-term commitment to pushing the limits of rail technology.
